It's no Super Bowl, but Pro Bowl still a tube sensation

The Pro Bowl earned its highest television rating since 2000.

The NFC's 55-41 victory over the AFC on Sunday drew a 7.7 rating and 12 share on Fox. That's up 8 percent from last year, when the game first moved from the week after the Super Bowl to the week before it.
The game earned a 21.0/28 in New Orleans. Milwaukee averaged a 15.6/23 even though no Super Bowl-bound Packers were playing in it.
Ratings represent the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned into a program. Shares represent the percentage of all homes with TVs in use at the time.

Eberflus follows Ryan to Cowboys' defensive staff

Matt Eberflus is following Rob Ryan to the Dallas Cowboys.
Eberflus was hired Monday as the linebackers coach of the Cowboys, keeping the same job he held with the Cleveland Browns the last two seasons. Ryan was the defensive coordinator in Cleveland during that time, and now he's the defensive coordinator in Dallas.
Before joining the NFL in 2009, Eberflus spent 17 years as a college coach.
In 2010, four of Cleveland's linebackers finished among the top 10 in the NFL in tackles.

Who should of won DPOY award

As we all know Troy Polamalu won DPOY but stat wise does not back this up. Ed Reed had 8 INT'S in 10 games.
Devin McCourty had a better year than Troy in the stat game. Devin had 7 INT'S same as Troy but what stands out in the stat game is Devin had 20 more solo tackles (yes Troy missed two games).Devin had 82 tackles with 2 force fumbles  to Troys 63 tackles 1 forced fumble. To me Devin the rookie who thought would not get playing time should have won DPOY award

Ravens to use franchise tag on Ngata

According to NFL.com's Jason La Canfora, the Ravens are expected to retain free agent DT Haloti Ngata with the franchise tag.he Ravens can't sign him to an extension without a new CBA, so using the tag is essentially their only means of ensuring Ngata's return. It's possible that a record number of franchise and transition tags will be used throughout the NFL after the Super Bowl. GM Ozzie Newsome remains intent on signing Ngata long term. Tagging him is the first step in that

Andy Pettitte

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com suspects that it will take more than a $12 million offer to lure Andy Pettitte away from retirement.
Why? Because Hiroki Kuroda, a worse pitcher on many levels than Pettitte, got a one-year, $12 million contract from the Dodgers earlier this offseason. Pettitte's people can simply point at that deal and say "we want more." The veteran southpaw is still deciding whether to return for a 16th major league season or retire to his comfortable Deer Park, Texas home

B's Bergeron is the first star of January

Patrice Bergeron has been named the NHL's player of the month for January.
The Boston center ranked up 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) and posted a plus-13 rating in 14 games to earn the distinction. Phoenix defenseman Keith Yandle was the second star of the month after he registered 17 points as well (three goals, 14 assists) to go with a plus-9 rating in 14 contests. Pekka Rinne, of the Nashville Predators, was the third star of January after he posted eight wins, earned the best goals-against average (1.71) and finished second in save percentage (.947) in 11 of his team's 13 games.

Dolphins to target Jets, Patriots free agents?

The Dolphins, who tried to acquire Patriots Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins before the trade deadline and likely will have interest in him this offseason in free agency,  can be encouraged by this: Mankins told The Boston Herald on Friday that he doesn’t expect to be back with New England. “I don’t see them trying to keep me,’’ he said, adding he would be unhappy if the Patriots put the franchise tag on him. Miami could hurt two division rivals by pursuing Mankins and Jets receiver Brad Smith, who averaged 7.1 yards per rush when he lined up at quarterback and was second in the league in kickoff return average (28.6).

Rob Gronkowski-TE- Patriots

Rob Gronkowski led Patriots tight ends with 756 snaps in 2010.
Aaron Hernandez played 486 snaps while veteran Alge Crumpler was at 540. Although the two rookies alternated big games through the first half of the season, Gronkowski established himself as the better all-around option as the season wore on. in the final eight games of the regular season, he caught 28 passes for 398 yards with seven touchdowns. Gronkowski projects to play even more snaps in 2011.

Bengals fire longtime coordinator Bratkowski

Bengals fired offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski.
This one comes out of left field as the Bengals were widely expected to keep Bratkowski, who just finished his 10th season as offensive boss. The timing suggests it may be related to Carson Palmer's trade request. The Bengals' offense has underperformed, failing to finish better than 22nd in points in any of the last three seasons. Former Vikings coach Brad Childress, who had dinner with Marvin Lewis a couple weeks ago, could emerge as a candidate.

Red Sox interested in former Tigers pitcher?

Jeremy Bonderman, RHP, free agent — At this point, he’s probably going to have to go somewhere on a minor league deal, even though he’d be a good tack-on to the end of someone’s rotation at age 28. The Red Sox are looking for pitching depth to place at Triple A, and Bonderman seems to be a good candidate for such a job. — Boston Globe

Martin Luther King’s son has cash for Mets?

Green is the only color that will count in any deal for the Mets. And that could be a home run for Martin Luther King III, who wants to become the first black owner in Major League Baseball, a baseball source said yesterday. “[Met owner] Fred Wilpon needs money, and I think that whoever comes in to buy the Mets is going to have to have very deep pockets and ready cash,” the expert said. No problem, King’s partner Larry Meli says. “We have the deep pockets, and deep pockets means cash. Our guys could do this, no question,” Meli said. In his first public comments on the issue, King yesterday acknowledged that the Mets have had a tough few years. “Well, no tougher than the Braves,” he joked at his suburban Atlanta home. He later issued a statement saying, if he “personally, or as part of a collective, can advance the vision of a more diverse ownership group in professional sports . . . then, like my father, I am prepared to act in that spirit.

Former Cavs coach to Indy?

Former Pacers assistant and Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Brown is one of the candidates the team will likely pursue this summer

Ford switching to Mustang in '13?

Although Jamie Allison, Ford's director of motorsports, stopped short of saying the Mustang will replace the Fusion as the automaker's entry in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series in 2013, it's abundantly clear Ford is leaning heavily in that direction.

Lakers concern themselves?

The regular season isn't generally something with which the Lakers concern themselves, but 2010-11 may be different. As coach Phil Jackson said when asked about losing to all the good teams, smiling beatifically: "Is it the playoffs yet?" ... Whether it's good news or not in Lakerdom, Sunday's loss to Boston was a special effort by your team. Of course, if the Lakers played this hard all the time, they would be two or three games behind San Antonio instead of 7 1/2 and Sunday would have felt more like a loss in January than the latest sign the end is near.

Brown a possibility in Indy?

While it remains to be seen whether Paul Silas stays in Charlotte, the Bobcats' former coach is still looking for work. Silas is having fun coaching this team, and his level of engagement is beyond what he expected. Paul is a different guy from when he took over for Dave Cowens with the Hornets all those years ago, and that's for the better. ... I wonder if the Pacers would turn to Larry Brown, after firing Jim O'Brien Sunday. Brown desperately wants to coach again and the Pacers have enough talent to get to the postseason. Wouldn't it be intriguing if Brown was coaching the Pacers, in a duel with the Bobcats for one of the last two playoff spots

Durant blasts Bosh as 'fake tough guy' (MUST READ AN COMMENT ON THE BLOG )

Chris Bosh didn't have any lingering animosity toward Kevin Durant after an altercation resulted in a double technical foul Sunday, but Durant wasn't so forgiving. After the game, Durant told reporters that Bosh was "a fake tough guy." The incident began when Durant was speaking with teammate James Harden with 6:46 left in the first quarter. "I was talking to my teammate and [Bosh] decided he wanted to put his two cents into it," Durant said. "I am a quiet guy, laid-back guy, but I'm not going to let nobody talk trash to me. He's on a good team now so he thinks he can talk a little bit. There are a lot of fake tough guys in this league and he's one of them."

Posada not ready to ditch the mitt

Saying it's not easy being a DH, Jorge Posada is still playing the part of the good soldier. He said Saturday night that his switch from behind the plate to full-time DH in 2011 "is what it is," while also playing the "whatever's best for the team" card. But the Yankees' longtime backstop also admitted later that he's keeping his mitt broken in "just in case," indicating he hasn't fully come to terms with being phased out of the position he's owned since the late '90s. "I'll catch. I'll catch. I'll catch this year," Posada said before Bernie Williams' charity dinner for the Hillside Food Outreach in New Rochelle. "I'll DH and then they're going to want me to catch one of those days. I'm keeping an open mind. I would love to catch. I'm training like I always do, and if I have to catch, I'll catch."

Harbaugh: Smith can be a winner

Though speculation had it that the 49ers would find their 2011 quarterback by way of the draft, free agency or trade, Jim Harbaugh added another option in a radio appearance. Harbaugh raised a fourth option -- retaining a current quarterback, in particular, Alex Smith. "I've been studying Alex Smith and watching him," Harbaugh said. ... "And I believe that Alex Smith can be a winning quarterback in the National Football League. I'm excited to work with him, get to know him."

Is 76er Iguodala tradeable?

Should the 76ers trade Andre Iguodala? Opportunities absolutely do exist for the Sixers to receive expiring contracts for Iguodala, although the level of "basketball value" the Sixers could find in return is probably uneven to the level of "basketball value" Iguodala possesses. The discrepancy exists because of Iguodala's over-the-top contract, on which he is still owed approximately $44 million through the 2013-14 season.

Mavs made run at Joe Johnson

The Dallas Mavericks made a brief run at Atlanta Hawks shooting guard Joe Johnson when he became a free agent last summer. But Johnson eventually chose to remain with the Hawks after signing a six-year, $120 million contract. "We did discuss it with them real briefly, just to touch base because you never know,'' owner Mark Cuban said. "He's a great player in a great city."

Carmelo blames Nets for lack of deal

Carmelo Anthony doesn't know if the Nets will renew their interest in his services. He stopped short of saying he would reciprocate their interest, should the Nets want to schedule another meeting. In an interview with the Daily News on Saturday - two days before his arrival in Newark - Anthony reiterated that it was the Nets who pulled the plug on the trade.

Inside Bengals' plans to pacify Palmer

Carson Palmer's dissatisfaction with the Bengals is a one way street. In fact, the team is taking Palmer off the hook for performing below expectations in 2010. People at Paul Brown Stadium tell me they believe the team didn't give Palmer the best chance to succeed last year because of what they surrounded Palmer with. If they keep Palmer - and they want to pacify him and make it work - they will try to rectify the situation by making sure the locker room understands that Palmer is the only leader. They also plan to give him a chance to hit more downfield throws.

Nebraska's Helu in Patriots' draft plans?

The Patriots could use another every-down running back if Fred Taylor retires as expected, and Nebraska's Roy Helu Jr. was the most complete back in Mobile. Has a good burst and ran away from defenders. Also was very sound in his blocking and showed good hands out of the backfield.

Chad Ochocinco took a shot at Bengals owner Mike Brown

Chad Ochocinco took a shot at Bengals owner Mike Brown on Twitter on Sunday.
He tweeted, "If you have a business is it right for the people that work for you to care more about success than the rightful owner itself?" Ocho is obviously determined to force his way out of Cincinnati this offseason, but as quarterback Carson Palmer has recently found out, that's much easier said than done. The Bengals offseason promises to be one of the most fascinating in the NFL.

Report: Eagles to entertain offers for Kolb

Buzz around the water cooler at Senior Bowl practices placed a second-round or possible late-first round trade value on Kevin Kolb.
SI.com's Peter King has been adamant that the Eagles will not move Kolb, but ESPN's Adam Schefter now reports the team will entertain offers. Kolb is only signed through 2011, so GM Howie Roseman would be remiss if he didn't at least consider flipping him for a first-round pick and signing a veteran to back up Michael Vick. The 49ers, Cardinals, Vikings, Titans, Panthers and perhaps even the Browns could be interested in Kolb

Newton expected to work out in front of media next month

Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton is expected to hold a workout in front of the media on Feb. 10 in San Diego.
Newton has been working with quarterbacks coach George Whitfield Jr. leading up to the NFL combine. Whitfield worked with Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger during his four-game suspension.
Newton, who is skipping his senior year to enter the draft, led Auburn to the BCS national championship during his lone season with the Tigers.
He won the Heisman and Maxwell player of the year awards, along with the Davey O'Brien and Manning awards as the top quarterback.

Mets will host 2013 All-Star Game

The Mets will host the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field, people with knowledge of the situation told SI.com.
While the decision isn't being characterized as "official," plans are already in the works.
The team has not hosted the All-Star Game since 1964, the longest drought of any franchise.
Mets owners Fred and Jeff Wilpon dropped a bombshell yesterday by announcing they seek limited partners to buy 20-25 percent of the team in the wake of what they characterized as "uncertainty" following the lawsuit filed against them by Irving Picard, the trustee liquidating Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities Inc.

Knicks' Williams, Hawks' Williams suspended for throwing punches

The Atlanta Hawks Marvin Williams has been suspended two games and the New York Knicks' Shawne Williams one game for throwing punches Friday night.
Marvin Williams started things when he shoved Shawne Williams in the back as they ran up the court with 43 seconds left in the Hawks' 111-102 victory. The NBA cited Marvin Williams on Saturday for throwing punches and fighting, while Shawne Williams got a one-game ban for throwing a punch during an altercation.
Both suspensions are without pay.
Marvin Williams will miss the Hawks' game at Dallas on Saturday and at home against Toronto on Wednesday. Shawne Williams will sit out when the Knicks host Detroit on Sunday.

Senators shopping Gonchar?

Is dealing Sergei Gonchar fantasy or reality before the Feb. 28 deadline? League sources say Senators GM Bryan Murray is trying to move Gonchar, who was Ottawa's biggest free-agent signing last off-season. While the names of defenceman Chris Phillips and winger Jarkko Ruutu have been bandied about on the trade market for months, Gonchar's availability has only just surfaced and comes as a bit of a surprise.

Rangers pitcher responds to Berkman's dig

While discussing on Thursday why he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals, Lance Berkman found a way to take a couple shots at the Rangers. The outfielder told 1560 AM in Houston that the Rangers would be "an average team" in 2011. He also questioned the signing of Adrian Beltre. Rangers pitcher C.J. Wilson responded to those comments on The Ben & Skin Show on ESPN 103.3 FM on Friday. "I think it's funny," said Wilson. "He was contemplating retirement, so I'm not going to take anything too seriously. I'm not going to get offended by anything he says. If that's a representative idea of what people around the league think, that's better for us because they're going to do the same thing and they're going to not take us seriously. If we end up stomping through the playoffs again, everyone will be like, 'Wow, what a bummer.' " Berkman said he felt like if the Rangers didn't re-sign Cliff Lee that they were going to be an average team.

Nomar to Cover Wednesday Night Baseball

Former major league infielder Nomar Garciaparra will serve as an analyst for ESPN's Wednesday night baseball telecasts in the coming season. Garciaparra, who called select games last season, will work alongside Dave O'Brien.

The Red Sox' first round pick (12th overall) of the 1994 draft Garciaparra spent eight seasons in Boston, hitting .323/.370/.555 with 173 homers and 669 runs batted in. Garciaparra was traded to the Cubs at the trade deadline in 2004 and also played for the Dodgers and Athletics before retiring following the 2009 season.

Harbaugh disputes Zorn-Cameron rift report

According to a league source, Ravens coach John Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron spent all day Tuesday questioning quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn about his teaching methods with Joe Flacco and were concerned about Zorn being insubordinate. Zorn was fired by the Ravens on Thursday. Harbaugh disputed that report, saying it is "inaccurate and unfair to Jim Zorn" and "in no way does it describe Jim's relationship with the Ravens, and that includes with his fellow coaches while here and our players."

All 106 Super Bowl XLV players ranked Part 2

49. RB Isaac Redman -- Steelers

Redman has made some big plays this season. He is a hard-charging runner who can help wear down a defense as a complement to Rashard Mendenhall.

50. FB Quinn Johnson -- Packers

One of the Packers' many fullbacks, Johnson is a pure blocker. He is especially strong in protection and could be especially useful helping pick up the Steelers' impressive blitz package.

51. NT Chris Hoke -- Steelers

Hoke's niche is simple. He is a tough guy, a backup nose tackle who can't hold the point like this defense needs week after week. Still, he's a good fill-in who doesn't embarrass himself when given a lot of snaps.

52. CB William Gay -- Steelers

In 2009, Gay was miscast as a starting cornerback. And even as a nickel corner, he has been a liability at times. But Gay is very young and might be able to step up his game as a zone corner with average speed.

53. OLB Jason Worilds -- Steelers

Pittsburgh's second-round draft pick has done a nice job on special teams. He fits the mold of what the Steelers want at outside linebacker. Worilds could be strong if given the chance -- but cracking the lineup at that position is nearly impossible.

54. SS Charlie Peprah -- Packers

This is the starting strong safety in the best secondary in the league. But he is also the biggest liability among the regulars.

55. TE Andrew Quarless -- Packers

He has benefited from Jermichael Finley's injury. No one is in Finley's class athletically, but Quarless isn't a tremendous drop off in that capacity. This has been a learning year.

56. TE Matt Spaeth -- Steelers

The Steelers use a lot of two TE sets and that could be their predominant base personnel grouping against the Packers. Green Bay's defense has had a difficult time containing tight ends.

57. SS Ryan Mundy -- Steelers

Mundy is not a quick-twitch guy and certainly the drop off from Troy Polamalu to Mundy was severe. But if you just analyze how Mundy played on his own merits while Polamalu was out, he did quite well.
[+] EnlargeMason Crosby
AP Photo/Dave MartinCrosby made 22 of 28 field goal attempts this season.

58. K Mason Crosby -- Packers

Crosby is a talented young kicker who was pretty solid on field goals this season. The real problem for Crosby has been kickoffs.

59. OLB Erik Walden -- Packers

Walden is the starting right outside linebacker but has had only one strong game as a starter. Overall, he hasn't played the run well or consistently harassed the quarterback. Green Bay needs more from him against Pittsburgh and LT Jonathan Scott, who can certainly be had.

60. G Ramon Foster -- Steelers

Foster is far from a great player, but right guard was a massive hole in an already suspect offensive line before he took over. So, in some ways, Foster has been a pleasant surprise and something of a stabilizing factor.

61. OT T.J. Lang -- Packers

Lang saw action at left tackle against the Bears, which made Green Bay quite weak with its edge protection against such a good defense. He is a bit of a tackle/guard tweener, but if done right for the long term, he could be a valuable swing man.

62. RB Mewelde Moore -- Steelers

Moore isn't flashy, but he has quietly gotten the job done. He can handle early-down carries but is better off in a third-down role. He doesn't bring the big-play ability that coaches covet for that distinction.

63. QB Byron Leftwich -- Steelers

Leftwich has plenty of NFL experience and understands the game. He also has a huge arm. As backup quarterbacks go, you could do much worse. But he also has a very exaggerated windup and can't get out of the way of pass-rushers, which is a huge problem behind Pittsburgh's offensive line.

64. DE Nick Eason -- Steelers-

He has lasted in the league for some time now and reinvented himself as a 3-4 defensive end after being drafted as an upfield three technique type.

65. FB Korey Hall -- Packers

Hall is a solid all-around blocker who will very rarely touch the ball. He sees the least playing time of the Packers' fullbacks.

66. C Doug Legursky --Steelers

It was Legursky who got the call at center when Maurkice Pouncey went down. He is not physically imposing, but he is gritty and tough. The Steelers like his movement skills enough to sometimes line him up in the backfield in short-yardage situations. Still, they should be praying for Pouncey to play.

67. OT Jonathan Scott -- Steelers

Scott was forced into the starting left tackle spot when Max Starks was lost for the season. Let's just say that he is not starting material. But he is the type of guy who has value at either tackle spot as a backup when those above him on the depth chart are healthy.
[+] EnlargeRandle El
Steve Mitchell/US PresswireRandle El is no stranger to Super Bowl heroics.

68. TE Donald Lee -- Packers

Lee has been more or less phased out of the Packers' offense. They want more dangerous receiving threats at the position, like Finley or Quarless, which Lee isn't at this point of his career. And his blocking has been a big problem, too.

69. G Trai Essex -- Steelers

Better at guard than tackle, Essex is smart and does provide the versatility to play four line positions. But in the end, he isn't good enough at any of them and is best as a seventh O-lineman on game day.

70. WR Antwaan Randle El -- Steelers

Randle El still can provide a gimmicky aspect to an offense, but he had only one game this season where he really made an impact. And the Steelers' rookie wideouts have gone past him quite abruptly.

71. K Shaun Suisham -- Steelers

Suisham is a journeyman kicker who was signed after the release of Jeff Reed. He has been consistent putting the ball through the uprights since joining the Steelers but isn't a very good kickoff guy.

72. DE C.J. Wilson -- Packers

Wilson shows some promise as a run-stuffing defensive end in the Packers' three-man front, but he isn't going to get to opposing quarterbacks with regularity.

73. TE David Johnson -- Steelers

Johnson is the closest thing Pittsburgh has to a true fullback. He is equal parts tight end and fullback, but that skill set gets him time with the offense.

74. ILB Keyaron Fox -- Steelers

Fox knows what it takes to stick in this league. He can fill in on a short-term basis at linebacker but isn't a real physical take-on player. But he is a very good special teamer.

75. OLB Frank Zombo -- Packers

Zombo was given the chance to seize the starting spot at right outside linebacker. But he got injured and just doesn't get after the quarterback with nearly enough regularity. He is still young and could improve into a solid backup.

76. DE Howard Green --Packers

Green has gotten snaps of late with Cullen Jenkins' injury, but he doesn't show any dynamic qualities.

77. FS Jarrett Bush -- Packers

Bush is a big liability in coverage and is someone Roethlisberger should surely attack if he sees playing time with the defense. But Bush is an excellent special teams player and has been tremendous on punt coverage in the playoffs.

78. SS Atari Bigby -- Packers

Bigby is a backup strong safety type who plays the game physically yet makes some mental errors and doesn't have great range. But he is a very good player on the kickoff coverage unit.

79. FS Will Allen -- Steelers

Allen is a core special teams player who will also see the field on defense from time to time. But he has done little to speak of this season.

80. ILB Matt Wilhelm -- Packers

Wilhelm is strictly a backup inside linebacker but has some experience in the 3-4. His value lies on special teams.

81. RB Dimitri Nance -- Packers

Nance is intriguing. He is a physical downhill runner who fits this system well. James Starks' emergence has hurt his playing time, but he could factor in down the road. He needs work in the passing game.
[+] EnlargeCrabtree
Eric Hartline/US PresswireCrabtree scored against the Eagles in the wild-card round.

82. CB Anthony Madison -- Steelers

Madison dresses because he is a demon on special teams. But when he plays defense, Madison is an undersized cover man who opposing quarterbacks quickly attack.

83. TE Tom Crabtree -- Packers

Crabtree sees the field a fair amount and has some skills as a pass catcher. But he just gets rag-dolled in the run game and can't be expected to uproot a Pittsburgh outside linebacker.

84. QB Charlie Batch -- Steelers

The Steelers know what they have in Batch. He can still move the chains and keep things competitive. He didn't perform terribly while Roethlisberger was suspended.

85. C Jason Spitz -- Packers

Spitz showed some promise early in his career and his ability to play guard or center was attractive, but he really had a tough time when he saw the field this season.

86. CB Pat Lee -- Packers

Lee was drafted with high hopes but cracking this secondary isn't easy. Frankly, Lee just has not warranted more playing time.

87. OT Tony Hills -- Steelers

Hills has seen a little bit of playing time this year with the rash of offensive tackle injuries in Pittsburgh. He has good movement skills and could develop into a left tackle down the road, but for now, he just isn't strong enough.

88. WR Brett Swain -- Packers

Swain is barely a factor on the offense, but he is a core special teams player.

89. CB Keenan Lewis -- Steelers

This is a bigger corner with a good overall skill set. But like many Steelers corners in the past, he has more or less redshirted during his rookie season.

90. OLB Diyral Briggs -- Packers

Briggs has some special teams tackles and has been a pretty solid contributor in that facet. But as a linebacker, there has not been a ton to get excited about. He could use more bulk on his long frame.

91. ILB Stevenson Sylvester -- Steelers

He is thin and somewhat high cut to handle the rigors of playing inside linebacker in the Steelers' 3-4. But Sylvester has been a factor on special teams and could add lower body mass and power as he matures.

92. LS Greg Warren -- Steelers

Warren is a good enough long snapper who has the faith of the coaching staff. To his credit, he has dealt well with two kickers and two punters/holders this season.

93. LS Brett Goode -- Packers

Goode is a middle of the road long snapper who doesn't stand out in any certain area, which is just fine.

94. QB Graham Harrell -- Packers

Harrell had a very successful college career, but he is buried behind an excellent starting quarterback and an excellent backup.

95. RB Jonathan Dwyer -- Steelers

This rookie also had an excellent college career but has yet to make an impact at this level. He has good size and could be a factor down the road in this power running scheme after he greatly improves his skills in the passing game.

96 OT Chris Scott -- Steelers

Scott is a rookie lineman who could project to tackle or guard. He could factor in down the road -- maybe as a sixth lineman.
[+] EnlargeKapinos
Matthew Emmons/US PresswireKapinos played in four regular-season Steelers games.

97. ILB Rob Francois -- Packers

Francois has factored in on special teams and a little on defense. He isn't yet good enough at the point of attack. Injuries at right outside linebacker could propel Francois into this game.

98. P Jeremy Kapinos -- Steelers

Pittsburgh picked up Kapinos after Daniel Sepulveda was lost for the season. It is a downgrade and he is unlikely to be with the team after this season.

99. WR Arnaz Battle -- Steelers

Battle is strictly a special teams player now and isn't close to getting into the wide receiver rotation.

100. DE Jarius Wynn -- Packers

Wynn could stand to add more bulk and strength to better hold the point as a 3-4 defensive end.

101. CB Brandon Underwood -- Packers

Underwood factors in on special teams and has seen plenty of snaps in that facet of the game. A tall young corner, he could develop into a contributor as a depth cover man.

102. CB Crezdon Butler -- Steelers

As alluded to above, Pittsburgh tends to use mid-round picks on corners and let them develop slowly, having them make their bones on special teams. That is the plan for Butler.

103. G Nick McDonald -- Packers

McDonald didn't see a snap with the Packers' offense and is strictly a possible long-term project.

104. DT Steve McLendon -- Steelers

He has bounced on and off the active roster and is just a depth player at end and could maybe help at nose tackle. But this isn't a guy who is going to see the field.

105. G Evan Dietrich-Smith -- Packers

Like McDonald, Dietrich doesn't have much of a pedigree to speak of and didn't see the field with the offense in 2010.

106. CB Josh Gordy -- Packers

Gordy hasn't factored in on defense or special teams. Someone has to be No. 106.

All 106 Super Bowl XLV players ranked

Ranking the Super Bowl rosters is never easy, especially when it comes to selecting the No. 1 player.
Last year, it wasn't difficult to put Peyton Manning right at the top. This year, there could be a great debate between Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers as the better quarterback. And it could be argued that they don't even belong in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots overall with the wealth of defensive talent in this game.
This matchup is loaded with star power and I think it is pretty clear that these are the two top defenses in football. Of course, this list will create a stir, and feel free to blast me for it. But below, I will justify why I have every player where I do -- although those guys at the caboose of this train are awfully difficult to really get a bead on considering how little they have played. My apologies to them and their families.
Also remember, the Packers have 15 players on injured reserve and have been crushed by injuries this season, so several of these young men would not be a part of this team in a typical season. Here we go.

1. QB Ben Roethlisberger -- Steelers

Roethlisberger has that "been there, done that" factor over Rodgers. That isn't a knock on Rodgers, but Roethlisberger is simply amazing when it matters most. He didn't throw the ball well versus the Jets, but played a far better game than his numbers would indicate. His playmaking ability is just off the charts. Roethlisberger finds a way time and time again.
[+] EnlargeAaron Rodgers
John David Mercer/US PresswireAaron Rodgers has big-time ability, but this is his first taste of the big stage.

2. QB Aaron Rodgers -- Packers

Like Roethlisberger, Rodgers didn't have his best game last week. But also like Roethlisberger, he is immensely gifted and has progressed at a rapid pace. He might just be a quarterback without discernible weaknesses at this point. But he hasn't been on this stage yet. Roethlisberger has -- and is 2-for-2. But there is no reason to doubt Rodgers.

3. OLB James Harrison -- Steelers

Harrison would be my vote for Defensive Player of the Year. Harrison is the type of force that just never relents. He is tremendous in all facets of the game. Happen to remember what he did in his last Super Bowl appearance?

4. OLB Clay Matthews -- Packers

Matthews was a complete terror for the first half of the season, and although he wasn't bad to finish up the year, his play did drop off (probably due to injury). But this is a great football player. And he doesn't have a complement on the other side like Harrison does. Matthews is healthy, has been tremendous during the playoffs and could be poised for one more huge game.

5. SS Troy Polamalu -- Steelers

Polamalu's role in this great defense has diminished in the playoffs and he hasn't been near the line of scrimmage as much as usual. That makes me think he just hasn't been 100 percent healthy. Two weeks to prepare for this game could do him a world of good. If a defensive player is going to make a game-changing play, my bet is on Polamalu.

6. DT B.J. Raji -- Packers

This huge body just needs a bigger body of work to place himself in the elite category. He does it all. He absorbs double teams. He penetrates the backfield. And he is a great interior pass-rusher. He rarely leaves the field and has amazing stamina. Raji is a big-time difference-maker who is instrumental to this defense.

7. WR Greg Jennings -- Packers

In my opinion, Jennings had the best season of any wide receiver in the NFL this regular season. When TE Jermichael Finley went down, Jennings stepped up in a big way. He was also great last week and has gone for more than 100 yards receiving in the Packers' last two playoff games. The Steelers are going to have an extremely tough time containing him.

8. CB Tramon Williams -- Packers

A relative unknown until a few weeks ago, but Williams has been an excellent cover man for some time now. He has a great build, technique and fluidity for the position. He might only be getting better.

9. CB Charles Woodson -- Packers

With a win in this game, it should be very difficult to keep Woodson out of the Hall of Fame. He isn't like any other corner in the game today. Actually, he is more like the cornerback version of Polamalu with his extreme versatility and playmaking skills.

10. G Josh Sitton -- Packers

Who is Josh Sitton, you ask? He might just be the best guard in all of football. He is a tremendous run blocker and without question the best offensive lineman in the Super Bowl.

11. WR Mike Wallace -- Steelers

The first thing you think about with Wallace is speed -- and he has as much of it as anyone in football. But he has developed into an excellent all-around player. He is especially dangerous when considering Roethlisberger's ability to extend a play and his deep passing ability.

12. LB Lawrence Timmons -- Steelers

Timmons had a true breakout season. He is Dick LeBeau's version of Polamalu on the second level of the defense. Physically, he is a player without a weakness and his technique and recognition skills are quickly catching up to his natural talents.

13. LB LaMarr Woodley -- Steelers

Woodley has been great in the playoffs throughout his career and is nearly the player of his edge-rushing partner in crime, Harrison. Bryan Bulaga will need help with this guy.

14. FS Nick Collins -- Packers

The Packers have the best secondary in football. And with the exceptional cornerback play, it can be easy to overlook this Pro Bowl performer. Collins is someone Roethlisberger must be very aware of on game day.

15. DE Cullen Jenkins -- Packers

Although he is playing only about half the defensive snaps, getting Jenkins back from his calf injury made a very good defense even better. He has extreme versatility for a defensive lineman and tormented the Bears' blocking scheme in the NFC Championship Game.

16. DE Brett Keisel -- Steelers

Keisel gets noticed more for his beard than his play, but this is a very good all-around 3-4 defensive end in the prime of his career. He has stepped up dramatically in Aaron Smith's absence.
[+] EnlargeRashard Mendenhall
Andrew Weber/US PresswireRashard Mendenhall rushed for 121 yards in the Steelers' AFC title game victory.

17. RB Rashard Mendenhall -- Steelers

Mendenhall looked fresher and more explosive than anyone on the Jets' defense last week. He is a very talented runner and underappreciated receiver. Just imagine him in the old-school Bill Cowher offenses.

18. TE Heath Miller -- Steelers

Miller is among the best all-around tight ends in the NFL. He is about as reliable as you can get as a pass-catcher or blocker. Tight ends have tormented the Packers. Miller could be in for a huge Super Bowl.

19. NT Casey Hampton -- Steelers

With all the sub packages that Pittsburgh plays on defense, Hampton ends up on the sidelines a fair amount. But what he does well -- clog the middle and make everyone else's job easier -- he does exceptionally well.

20. C Maurkice Pouncey -- Steelers

Pouncey will be talked about leading up to the game as he tries to heal quickly from an ankle injury. Pittsburgh desperately needs him to do battle with Raji. But if he plays or not, Pouncey is next in an amazing Pittsburgh center lineage.

21. DE Aaron Smith -- Steelers

If we knew that Smith was going to play and be the player who we remember before his injury, he would be much higher on this list. But when looking at only what he would bring to the table for this game as Ziggy Hood's backup, he could be lower on the list. He was a difficult player to rank.

22. C Scott Wells -- Packers

Wells doesn't have great size, but he is a very good technician. He is one of the better centers in the league, but rarely is mentioned among the best at the position. This is a great stage to gain that recognition.

23. CB Ike Taylor -- Steelers

Taylor slipped and fell last week, which led to Santonio Holmes' long touchdown. And he hasn't been exceptional in the second half of the season. But overall, Taylor is clearly Pittsburgh's best cover man and is often assigned to the opponent's top wideout, which would often be Jennings this week.

24. OT Chad Clifton -- Packers

He has an injury similar to Pouncey's, but Clifton is much more likely to play. The Packers desperately need Clifton to return to 100 percent to do battle with Harrison. But this problem is compounded because of the disadvantage they have on the other side with Bulaga versus Woodley. Clifton has been a rock for the Pack.

25. DT Ryan Pickett -- Packers

Pickett can play nose tackle or end in Green Bay's three-man line. He also plays defensive tackle in the Packers' 2-4-5 personnel grouping that they are so fond of. The Packers are not short-handed up front with just Pickett and Raji on the field.

26. LB James Farrior -- Steelers

It would be easy to say that Farrior isn't what he used to be and his greatest asset is his leadership and experience. Although that isn't false, he really did have a great season and can still do a lot for this defense.

27. LB Desmond Bishop -- Packers

Again, few realize it, but Bishop stepped up in a big way this season. He has been a very solid player on the second level for Green Bay and is a major reason it is playing in this game.

28. DE Ziggy Hood -- Steelers

When Smith went down, it fell on the former first-round pick to step up his game. That was earlier than the Steelers had planned, but Hood has taken to his role extremely well. He has a chance to develop even further into an exceptional 3-4 end.

29. WR Hines Ward -- Steelers

Ward isn't as dynamic as he once was and doesn't separate from great cover men (like Green Bay's) like he did in his prime, but Ward still is the guy Roethlisberger looks for when he needs a play made. Ward could be headed to the Hall of Fame and already does have a Super Bowl MVP on his extensive résumé. Don't count him out just yet.
[+] EnlargeSam Shields
Doug Pensinger/Getty ImagesSam Shields forced a fumble and had two INTs in the NFC title game.

30. CB Sam Shields -- Packers

This is a guy who came out of nowhere. He had limited defensive experience at the college level, but anyone can see that he has a lot of natural ability. Shields is yet another great find by Green Bay's front office and is a key member of the league's best secondary.

31. WR Emmanuel Sanders -- Steelers

Sanders has a very bright future. He is explosive in all his movements and is excellent with the ball in his hands. And he is just a rookie, albeit one who acclimated himself very quickly to the NFL game. Sanders is now a major part of Pittsburgh's offense.

32. WR Jordy Nelson -- Packers

Nelson just makes plays when he is on the field. He can get deep or play the possession role. What he brings to the table can get lost among all of Green Bay's weapons, but Nelson would have a much more featured role on many NFL squads.

33. WR James Jones -- Packers

Like Nelson, Jones is a bit of a role player in this offense. But he is also very good in that role and could demand more action on another team. Jones is less consistent than Nelson, but might have more big-play potential.

34. FS Ryan Clark -- Steelers

A self-made player and a knockout hitter, Clark is a solid all-around safety who brings intelligence and leadership to Pittsburgh's secondary. He is a fine complement to Polamalu.

35. LB A.J. Hawk -- Packers

Although it is highly unlikely that he ever lives up to his lofty draft spot, Hawk has improved as the season has gone along. He can no longer be considered a liability, but rather a core player on one of the league's best defenses.

36. QB Matt Flynn -- Packers

Some might question this slotting, but Flynn looks like a potential starter in this league. And he could demand a nice draft pick in return over the offseason.

37. RB James Starks -- Packers

Starks would have been a much higher draft pick based just on his skill set and running ability. He is now the Packers' workhorse and we have seen glimpses lately of what he might become. Starks is still a work in progress, though, and running room should be very scarce against Pittsburgh.

38. WR Donald Driver -- Packers

Much like Ward, Driver is still a solid veteran wideout who has the complete trust of his star quarterback. The big plays are not there like they once were, but Driver can still contribute, although he really struggled last week.

39. OT Bryan Bulaga -- Packers

The Packers' first-round pick has ability and could even be the future at left tackle. But he has been a liability as the starting right tackle. Woodley should present big problems. But there should be better days ahead. In fact, Bulaga's play has drastically improved of late.

40. G Daryn Colledge -- Packers

The Packers' starting left guard, Colledge is built more like an offensive tackle than a guard. And he plays like it too, as he is clearly better in protection than in opening holes in the run game. He isn't a bad player, but is a reason Green Bay struggles with a consistent run game.

41. LB Larry Foote -- Steelers

Foote is a rock-solid backup to both interior linebacker positions and a favorite in the locker room. The drop-off wouldn't be too significant if a starter were to fall in SB XLV.

42. G Chris Kemoeatu, Steelers

This is a nasty player with great size and overall physicality. He pulls well and is a force coming downhill in the run game. But he isn't light on his feet and can be beaten in protection by quickness and counter moves.

43. CB Bryant McFadden, Steelers

Pittsburgh traded for McFadden last offseason after it allowed him to go to Arizona for one year. He isn't real impressive from a movement standpoint, but he does fit the system well and plays the game with toughness.

44. WR Antonio Brown -- Steelers

Brown has come on like gangbusters and made a gigantic play against the Ravens to secure the Pittsburgh victory. He is quick, but also fast and is very good with the ball in his hands.

45. RB Brandon Jackson -- Packers

Jackson is pretty much a jack-of-all-trades, but a master of none and really lacks special qualities. But he is solid in the pass game and the Packers know what they are going to get from him. That in itself has value.

46. P Tim Masthay -- Packers

Mastay was simply brilliant in Green Bay's win over the Bears. Going into that game, Chicago had a decisive special-teams advantage, but Masthay had something to say about that. The Packers might not have advanced without him.

47. FB John Kuhn -- Packers

Kuhn is a bit of a folk legend in Wisconsin. He is pretty easy to root for. He's an important short-yardage back and a key member of the Packers' Bone backfield.

48. OT Flozell Adams -- Steelers

Willie Colon was the Steelers' starting right tackle -- and a very good one. But massive Adams has been an acceptable Plan B -- particularly as a run blocker.

Shelf life for coaches continues to shorten in the NFL

Once upon a time, an NFL head coach had a job for life — or so it seemed.
Tom Landry coached the Cowboys for 29 years. Don Shula was in charge in Miami for 26 years. Bill Cowher led the Steelers for 15 years, and Mike Shanahan was the Broncos coach for 14 years. Marv Levy lasted 12 years in Buffalo and Joe Gibbs did the same tenure in Washington (his first time around).
Now, however, it seems like NFL owners change head coaches more often than this country changes presidents.

With the departure of Jeff Fisher from the Titans after 16 years, Andy Reid (12 years with the Eagles) is now the coach who has the longest tenure with one team. The only other coach in double digits is New England's Bill Belichick (11).

Here's how long the other coaches have been with their current teams:

8 years: Marvin Lewis (Bengals), Jack Del Rio (Jaguars).

7 years: Lovie Smith (Bears), Tom Coughlin (Giants).

5 years: Gary Kubiak (Texans), Mike McCarthy (Packers), Sean Payton (Saints).

4 years: Mike Tomlin (Steelers), Norv Turner (Chargers), Ken Whisenhunt (Cardinals).

3 years: John Harbaugh (Ravens), Tony Sparano (Dolphins), Mike Smith (Falcons).

2 years: Jim Caldwell (Colts), Todd Haley (Chiefs), Rex Ryan (Jets), Jim Schwartz (Lions), Steve Spagnuolo (Rams), Raheem Morris (Bucs).

1 year: Chan Gailey (Bills), Pete Carroll (Seahawks), Mike Shanahan (Redskins).

Pat Shurmur (Browns), John Fox (Broncos), Hue Jackson (Raiders), Ron Rivera (Panthers), Jason Garrett (Cowboys) Leslie Frazier (Vikings) and Jim Harbaugh (49ers) will be first-year coaches with their teams in 2011, although Garrett and Frazier finished the '10 season as interim head coaches.

Heat's trust issues exposing one-man shows

Doth protest too much? Probably aware that TNT's Reggie Miller, Steve Kerr and Marv Albert had correctly surmised on air that Miami's players lacked trust in each other on the court, the Heat responded after the game by volunteering just how much they'd trusted each other all night long. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra played the trust card afterward, dropping the word several times. So did LeBron James. [Dwyane] Wade, too. Not buying it. All night, players did one-on-one drills and turned isolation into the only offense in the playbook. ... For three quarters, the Heat consisted of a series of one-man shows, with only the goggled-up Wade doing it well.

Cavs shopping Mo, Antawn?

Mo Williams took the news of LeBron James' leaving especially hard, contemplating retirement then taking out some of his frustrations on Twitter. Going into this season, he was the early front-runner to become the town's new hero. That may not last long. While the Cavs have stumbled to an 8-37 record, Williams' name has surfaced in trade rumors as the Feb. 24 deadline draws near. ... It has also been reported by a number of outlets that Antawn Jamison is the subject of trade talks, as the Cavs are looking to make some significant moves before the deadline. Whether these are legit "trying to win" moves or "trying to get the No. 1 draft pick" moves, we'll see.
