The NFL Players Association is putting into place a plan that would prevent each top college prospect from attending next month's draft in New York, according to multiple league sources. The NFLPA already has contacted 17 top prospects that ordinarily would have received an invitation to attend the draft and informed them not to go.
Thus, when NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announces the name of the first player selected, the player will not walk on to the stage at Radio City Music Hall as has been the custom. The player will not be there to do interviews with ESPN or NFL Network. The draft will go on, but not in the manner in which it has been conducted before.
"As of right now, this is 100 percent happening," said one source familiar with the Players' Association thinking. "This is going down."
The Players Association even has gone so far as to consider placing the players on another competing network to do post-pick interviews, though no final decisions have been made. Another source said that, in this day and age, it's possible that the top prospects also could appear on a social media network platform, only.
Yet another source suggested the NFL still could try to pay the incoming rookies to attend the draft, but it is something the league never has done in the past.

Should Goodell resign?
Roger Goodell's work this week may come down to a simple decision. Does he want to be a $10 million mouthpiece for NFL owners, or a difference-maker who rescues his employers from themselves? It's one or the other. Because when it comes down to it, Goodell has a single job as commissioner of the world's most profitable sports league: make the NFL trains run on time. If he can't do that, then it's time to find another conductor. That's right, Goodell should resign immediately if this owners-created labor dispute becomes a living, breathing lockout by the end of Friday's federally mediated negotiating deadline. Once the owners press the nuclear lockout button, then Goodell must go.

It was a rumor a few months ago, now its a fact. Bengals star Carson Palmer has put his five-bedroom, two-story Cincinnati area mansion on the real estate market. The CINCINNATI ENQUIRER says the NFL QB who wants a trade, is asking for $2.1 million. He’s asked for a trade, or says he’ll retire if he doesn’t change teams.
Charles Barkley slams Cowboys star
Charles Barkley appearing on a Dallas area sports radio station said athletes who buy lots of jewelry like Dez Bryant are idiots. Barkley also said you have to learn to “back down” when you’re a celebrity. DALLAS MORNING NEWS says Sir Charles was asked if he wanted the Cowboys star receiver on his team.
No, because he’s going to be a star, but he’s already acting like a star before he’s a star. Right now, he’s very, very talented and the world is his if he wants it; I mean, the world is his but he’s got so much going on before he’s a full-blown superstar. Like right now, everybody thinks he is going to be a star but he’s got so much going before he’s a star, you got to wonder…when we give him a ton of money, how is he going to be? And that’s really what it comes down to…let’s quit kidding ourselves.
Former NFL player says firefighters ARE pro athletes
Erron Kinney played tight end for the Tennessee Titans, now he’s the captain of a fire department in Charleston, South Carolina. Kinney, who finished his career with 178 receptions for 1,750 yards (an average of 9.8 yards per reception) and ten touchdowns, tells FIREHOUSE.com he believes firemen are similar to NFL players.
“We are professional athletes,” Kinney said. “This is something we need to embrace. What we do is far more important.” He said that firefighters — along with public safety officers and members of the military — are considered to be tactical athletes by the National Strength and Conditioning Association

Niners take close look at Stanford standout
Thursday's pro day at Stanford featured all manner of NFL representation, with the majority coming from the nearby Niners. Among the coaches making the short drive up Highway 101 were defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, offensive coordinator Greg Roman, offensive line coach Tim Drevno and running backs coach Tom Rathman, who put Stanford fullback Owen Marecic through cone drills and then spent more than a half hour chatting with Marecic in a corner of the practice field. Marecic is considered the top fullback in the draft and could go as high as the third round. Fangio, Roman and Drevno, of course, coached at Stanford last season. Two 49ers scouts also were on hand Thursday.Gabbert moves up board, could go No. 1
It didn't take one analyst long to sum up his thoughts on Blaine Gabbert's pro day. NFL Network chief draft analyst Mike Mayock rendered his verdict on QB Blaine Gabbert following Missouri's pro day Thursday. "Bottom line, he's the first quarterback off the board, and it wouldn't surprise me if Carolina takes him at No. 1," Mayock said on Path to the Draft. The Panthers have been scrutinizing Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton in recent weeks and are admittedly considering a quarterback with the draft's first selection. New Carolina coach Ron Rivera did not attend Missouri's pro day, however the Panthers are scheduled to work Gabbert out privately this weekend. Gabbert has had dinners with the Bills and Vikings this week as well.3-14-2011

Comeback gives Pierce new chance to rip Barber
A few weeks ago, Tiki Barber was in spin classes, and not a few hours into an improbable comeback he's already taking heat from Antonio Pierce. Not surprisingly, the former Giants linebacker came out swinging at Barber Tuesday, a few hours after the stunning news that Barber is planning to come out of retirement. Pierce has long been critical of Barber both for being a disruption during the Giants' 2006 season and for being critical of Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin after Barber turned to broadcasting the following year. Pierce, speaking on ESPN's NFL Live, said Barber could be "very productive" in his NFL return, but probably not a very good locker room presence. ... "Tiki Barber the person, the leader, the person in that locker room? He's not going to do anything for your team."Should Goodell resign?

Kraft and his role in NFL labor issue
Kraft is one of 10 owners on the Management Council Executive Committee. He had touched on the labor issue at the Super Bowl.
"We have the greatest product going now. The American public and sponsors want this product," Kraft said at the time. "If we don't conclude a labor deal before March 4, that will be criminal."
Kraft added, "We could do this deal next week, in my opinion."
In addition to his role on the Management Council Executive Committee, Kraft serves on the following NFL committees: Finance Committee, Compensation Committee, Broadcasting Committee (chairman) and NFL Network Committee.

Report: Jets releasing Jenkins, Woody, others
The New York Daily News reports that the Jets will release NT Kris Jenkins, RT Damien Woody, DE Vernon Gholston, and OLB Jason Taylor.
None of the moves is surprising. Taylor, Jenkins, and Woody are all nearing the ends of their careers, and the latter two are coming off major surgery. Gholston has been one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history as the former No. 6 overall pick. All told, the four moves will save the Jets $24.33M in salary and bonuses, including Taylor's $10M offseason roster bonus. They will create room for free agent Santonio Holmes to be re-signed.
Bengals Chad Ochocinco to the AFC West?

New Raiders head coach Hue Jackson had great success with Ochocinco as receivers coach in Cincinnati.Bengals QB Carson Palmer could be traded to the 49ers

No. 1 overall pick Alex Smith turned out to be a huge bust and is now a free agent. San Francisco GM Trent Baalke wouldn’t go on the record regarding a deal for Palmer because of tampering rules.WIL THE 49ERS KEEP ALEX SMITH?
Thousands of fans have spoken and their feelings are clear. They've seen enough interceptions and fumbles and errant passes and droopy body language. They've crossed their arms and turned their backs. They never again want to see Alex Smith in a 49ers uniform. Yet Jim Harbaugh, the new coach of their choice, keeps saying he wants Smith to come back to San Francisco. With most 49ers fans hoping or believing the era of dread was dead, Harbaugh is giving it life. He has spent recent weeks expressing admiration for the quarterback 49ers fans hoped was gone for good. "I'm hopeful that Alex, as an unrestricted free agent, will choose that his next team to play with, the fresh start, is with the San Francisco 49ers," Harbaugh said at the NFL scouting combine last week.
PHINS INTRIGUED WITH INGRAM
When Alabama running back Mark Ingram grunted through each of his drills Sunday at the NFL scouting combine, the Dolphins were most certainly paying attention to every movement. The Heisman Trophy winner in 2009 has become an intriguing prospect for Miami as it prepares for the draft in April, especially if a lockout keeps the team from either immediately exploring free agency or re-signing Ronnie Brown.

COWBOYS DRAFT PRIORITY SHOULD BE .....
The list of what the Cowboys must accomplish in the draft is as long as the team's fall this past season. As the Cowboys put on their reading glasses and pick themselves up, one need rises near the top. The secondary. Maybe the Cowboys decide to use their first-round pick on Nebraska's Prince Amukamara, a popular selection in mock drafts these days. Maybe they wait until the second round to choose from a cluster of talented corners or go with UCLA safety Rahim Moore, allowing the club to move the beleaguered Alan Ball back to his natural cornerback position.
WOULD THE EAGLES TRADE FOR VINCE YOUNG?
What does the future hold for Vince Young? We have been assured by the Titans front office, and verified by coach Mike Munchak, it will not be in Nashville. One trade that makes sense for both teams would be sending Young to the Eagles for backup and former starter Kevin Kolb. Kolb would fit more of what the Titans ran under Mike Fisher, and Mike Munchak and new offensive coordinator Chris Palmer say they will start with the same system Fisher ran.
