NBA UPDATES

Dwight Howard has his eyes on Los Angeles and New York, sources close to him have insisted for months, and nothing short of championship basketball may be enough to compel him to re-sign with the Magic.

Lakers coach Phil Jackson said Pau Gasol understands what the Lakers expect from him. “He is who he is,” Jackson said. “We’re not going to make him into Garnett. He’s not going to go around punching guys [below the belt].” Jackson was referring to Celtics forward Kevin Garnett, who recently hit Phoenix Suns forward Channing Frye below the belt during a game. It’s about Gasol using his considerable skills, which have helped make him second on the team in scoring (18.7) and assists (3.6), and first in rebounding (10.5) and shot blocking (1.86). “He’s an intelligent person,” Jackson said. “He understands what this game is about.”Frustrated for weeks about his diminished role, Rockets guard Aaron Brooks will have no role at all tonight against the Denver Nuggets. The Rockets suspended Brooks for one game for leaving the court in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s win over the Memphis Grizzlies at Toyota Cente

This is not to say had the Nuggets been savvy enough, current Knicks rookie forward Landry Fields could be wearing powder blue, but in the always-interesting world of how players end up where they are, here’s how Fields was eventually drafted. The Knicks selected him in last year’s draft with an L.A. Clippers pick the Nuggets held. The Nuggets got the pick from the Clippers in the Marcus Camby trade in July 2008. The Nuggets traded that pick to the Knicks for Renaldo Balkman two weeks after that. The Knicks took the Stanford standout with the 39th pick, and this season Fields had been heavily mentioned in trade scenarios to the Nuggets.
